Step 1: Determine Which Program You Qualify For

There are two main types of Social Security disability benefits:

• Work history: Jobs held in the last 15 years
• Personal information: Social Security number, birth certificate, contact information
• Financial records: Especially important for SSI applicants

Having organized and complete documentation can significantly improve your chances of approval.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

You can apply for disability benefits in Nebraska in the following ways:

• By Phone: Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213

Step 5: Track Your Application

After applying:

• Set up a mySSA account to monitor your application status online
• Respond quickly to any requests for additional information from the SSA or the Nebraska Disability Determination Services (DDS)

The initial decision may take 3 to 6 months.

Step 6: Be Prepared for a Denial

Many disability claims are denied initially, even if they’re valid. If your application is denied:

• Don’t give up — you have the right to appeal
